21CN

21CN is the name given to BT's next generation network programme, under which it is creating an IP-based national fibre network to enable communication in a range of formats and support the demand for voice and data convergence. One of the most significant benefits of the network is the flexibility of choice and control that customers will gain in the way they use the connectivity services made available. 21CN will enable you to provide faster and more stable broadband at ADSL2+ speeds as well as Quality of Service (QoS) options for customers who wish to be able to prioritise traffic.

BT is enabling its exchanges for 21CN on a roll-out programme starting June 2008. Not all new services will be available right away from all exchanges. Existing ADSL customers shouldn't notice any difference to service. Some ENTAnet customers in Birmingham have already been migrated to the new technology. Newer services will be available over the next few months.

Windows Server 2008

Last week Microsoft released the latest version of Windows Server - Windows Server 2008 - along with new releases of Visual Studio and SQL Server.

We are checking out these new versions to see what benefits there may be for our clients. Windows Server 2008 includes some "virtualisation" features for the first time. Virtualisation is something Realcom have implemented in client systems for a number of years using VMWare. Briefly, this allows more than one operating system to run on a physical server. Many applications need a separate server to run for performance and consistency reasons so one ends up with a server "farm" - each server using its own Windows Server OS, server hardware, power requirements and rack space.

Virtualisation also allows us to build in resilience and redundancy by enabling systems and applications to be moved across the available hardware should a server computer fail.

Contact us for more information about servers and virtualisation.
