Features and functions of a server network
When there are more than 5 or 6 workstations on a network (and sometimes when there are fewer) it is recommended that a server is installed. The server's role is to provide the following functions on
behalf of the workstations: and network as a whole:
- Storage and management of the company's main data files and copies of program files
- User log-on security
- Sharing and management of resources - files, printers, CDs, programs
- Management of applications software
- Virus protection
- Back-up and recovery of files and messages
- Internet access
- E-mail management (internal and Internet mail)
- Management of incoming and outgoing faxes
- Remote access management (for users on-the road or at home and for remote support)
- Database management software to handle shared database files
- Intranet (local company information and resources)
For small-medium companies Microsoft Small Business Server
provides a cost-effective and powerful package which, when properly configured and set up, provides a number of server functions and business applications. Larger businesses may need the power and flexibility of separate servers for messaging, file storage, security and applications.
For a resilient and cost effective solution we sometimes install virtual servers which spread the server functions and applications over any number of physical server machines. These may be running
Windows Server or Linux operating systems or a combination. The best configuration depends on what you are trying to achieve, your budget and what you already have in place.
For peace of mind and total protection against viruses and worms on your network and workstations you will need to install server and network-aware software such as Sophos, and you may need to consider blocking or filtering of content from web sites.
