Control access to web sites and protect from unacceptable content
Control of access to web sites and filtering of unacceptable content can be achieved in a number of ways depending on your particular requirements and network topology. It is possible to set up "black
lists" of sites known to have undesirable content which will be refused to users. This could also be used to prevent users using HotMail or other web-based private mail accounts during the working day.
But this is not very effective against pornographic or other unsavoury sites which are being launched all the time with new web addresses.
It's also possible to monitor web use by individual users, but that is often seen as intrusive and is often a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has gone.
Content filtering, access control and virus protection can be located at various points to protect the users and company network from abuse. For example, a firewall located at the point of access to the
internet can provide content filtering and virus protection and be managed centrally by the IT support team. Content filtering and can also be included in some broadband routers and personal firewall
products.
An alternative is to restrict access to a "white list" of approved sites. This is restrictive and needs constant management but may be appropriate for primary, junior
